Vienna VA Data

About this site

A faithful mirror of the public record.

What this is

Vienna VA Data shows every recorded vote of the Town of Vienna, Virginia Town Council since the town’s electronic records begin in October 2013 — every roll call, every member, every agenda item, exactly as recorded. The point is simple: the public record exists, but it is scattered across hundreds of meeting pages and PDFs. This site makes it legible in one place.

Where the data comes from

Everything here is drawn from the Town of Vienna’s own public records system (Legistar), retrieved through its public API. The raw, unmodified responses are archived in the site’s public repository, so anyone can verify that what is displayed matches what the town published. Every meeting page links to the town’s official meeting record and, where published, the official minutes PDF — the strongest way to check any vote is to follow those links and compare.

The Elections section draws on a second official source: precinct-level results from the Virginia Department of Elections’ historical elections database. Its numbers, the precinct approximation involved, and its limits are explained on that page.

What this site deliberately does not do

No scores. No rankings. No “voted with the majority X% of the time.” Vote values are never simplified: Aye, Nay, Absent, and Abstain are different things and are always shown exactly as recorded, including the rare record where the town entered no value at all. Interpretation is left to the reader, with the sources one click away.

Nothing is selected or omitted: every recorded vote in the town’s system appears here, not a curated subset. The one correction applied to the raw data is documented in the open — where Legistar holds duplicate person records for the same member, their votes are merged into one page and the merge is noted on that page and in the repository.

Topic categories are unofficial

The one editorial layer on this site is the topic categories (Budget, Land Use, Parks, and so on). The Town of Vienna does not tag its records by topic, so this site assigns them to make browsing easier. They are labeled “unofficial” wherever they appear, they never alter the underlying records, and the complete mapping is public and correctable.

Corrections

If anything here does not match the town’s official record, that is a bug and it will be fixed. Please open an issue on GitHub with a link to the page and the official source.

Who runs this

Vienna VA Data is independently maintained. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by the Town of Vienna. The data refreshes automatically from the town’s records every Tuesday; the date of the last refresh appears at the bottom of every page.
